Music Spotlight of the Month: Ricky Jarman

Ricky Jarman Music Spotlight of the Month (August 2016)

I: Ricky, thank you so much for taking the time to tell us more about yourself and your music. Eli and Lu have been watching you bloom since the days of ECSU; you all attended the same university. Since, you have gone on to produce and deliver some exceptional work. But first, tell everyone who you are as an artist and where you are from.

R: First off, thank you so much for the kind words. As you may or may not know, I am a pop singer/songwriter who also enjoys modeling, acting, and dancing. Yes I did attend some college courses at ECSU where I first met Eli and Lu. I also had the pleasure of playing two seasons of college football with ECSU as well. I am originally from North Carolina but since that time at ECSU, I made the choice to move up to NYC to continue pursuing my passions in the entertainment world. That’s where I currently reside now.

I: Ricky, every musician or artist remembers where it all began. How did you get your start in music?

R: My first on stage memory was when I was in the 4th grade. It was at my sister’s dance recital. My childhood best friend and I were given the opportunity to perform, where we sang “As Long As You Love Me” by The Backstreet Boys. It was a really fun experience! It was at that moment where I knew this was the path I wanted to pursue.

I: (Laughs) Who didn’t love Backstreet boys back then? Great story. So, you released a new music video for your song, “Lucky,” back in May. The video is really captivating. It starts off with a cinematic piece. Tell us a bit about the song and how the video concept came about.

_RNY6377aBWR: Thank you! Filming the “Lucky” music video was such a fantastic experience as are all my music video shoots. What was different about this one though, was the fact of how smooth everything went. Normally there are a few hiccups here and there where you have to be willing to compromise on a few creative angles and modify based on whatever is going on that is effecting the initial plans. None of that had to be done with this video! Everything went perfect as planned! I really enjoy being a part of the creative process so I write most of my story lines and direct most of my own music videos. I wanted to present something that could break down all age barriers. I wanted a story that was relatable to all and could stand the test of time. Growing up and getting older is a part of life, but who doesn’t look back on the past wishing they could go back to some point in their lives? So I decided to start the video out with an older couple who longed to be back in their youth. Not only was this couple older but the lady in the relationship was shown as being deaf. It isn’t until they turn back to their younger selves, that she gets her hearing back during their magical journey. I would have to say that “Lucky” is my most favorite video I have done thus far.

I: It truly is a nice piece and song. What other projects are you currently working on? What’s next from Ricky Jarman?

R: I just recently released my newest remix EP for my “Lucky” single which was a collaboration between multiple very talented producers and DJ’s from around the globe. Now I am prepping for a few upcoming live performances and also the filming of my next music video for a song called, “Like A Devil”. This next song was written by Sam Harmonix and I, and is darker than anything I have released up to now. Most of my music is up tempo and happy. This next song will show a darker side of me, which I hope the audience can relate to and enjoy.

I: Interesting. Can’t wait to see the video. Where or who do you grab your inspiration from? What motivates you?

R: I grab inspiration from all kinds of things. My faith is definitely a motivator along with my wonderful family who has always been there to support me and my passions. The biggest inspiration and motivator for me, though, would just have to be day-to-day life. We all experience different emotions on a daily basis and it is from our experiences, which we can pull off some of our best creative work.ricky_fullbody (1)

I: Alright, we have a few fun questions. Ready? First one, if you could work with any music artist in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

R: I’d want to work with Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, and Marvin Gaye. I’d want to work with Michael Jackson because of his unique approach to music and the way he internalizes it to physically show the passion he feels inside from the music. I’d want to work with Justin Timberlake because Justin is an all around amazing talent who is at the top of his game in every aspects of entertainment. He’s not only an amazing artist but he can hang with the best of them in dance, modeling, acting, and anything else he puts his mind to. Marvin Gaye is simply a legend in his own right. He has helped to create some of life’s best music, which I would venture to think helped to inspire some of Michael’s approaches along with the influences of James Brown as well.

I: Amazing list of artist! Second question. What do you love most about being an artist?

R: What I love about being an artist is the ability music has to influence others. It’s a pretty powerful gift if you think about it. I am very grateful to have that gift. Music is probably the biggest influence on each of our lives and how we choose to go through this life. Music can either influence us for good or for bad. What I love and what I want most is to be able to stand on a platform that gives me a voice that will be heard and can help this world to be a better place by being a positive light and role model to those who care to listen.

I: Three words that describe you?

R: Wow, that’s tough to only be able to give three words! (Laughs) If I had to choose though, I would say passionate, fun, and hard working.

I: Last one. Ricky, what hidden talents do you have?

R: I’m not sure what HIDDEN talents I have, but I can beat box and do back flips. Those are things I use to not show off as much but am starting to. Does that count?

I: (Laughs) Yes, that counts! Most people cannot flip or beat box, trust me I’ve tried. (Laughs). If people want to find out more about you or stay up to date on everything you have going on, where can they find that information?

R: The best place to go to stay up to date on me and my music, OR to connect with me on any of my social media platforms would be my website:

It’s a one-stop shop for everything Ricky Jarman.

I: Thank you again Ricky for your time. We look forward to hearing more great work from you!
